Ancaster Vs Hamilton: What Are the Differences?

Share This Post:

An article highlighting the differences between Ancaster and Hamilton might seem to be a bit of a misnomer. Ancaster is part of the city, after all, under the umbrella of the Regional Municipality of Hamilton–Wentworth.

Still, they are two completely different communities with distinct values and characteristics. In this post, we’ll take a look at what Ancaster and Hamilton have in common and what sets them apart.

Location

Ancaster lies to the west of Hamilton, past Scenic Drive & Upper Paradise Road. It is made up of both urban and rural areas, with the main shopping and dining stretch in the Meadowlands. Drive down Wilson Street, head east, and you’ll come to Westdale, one of Hamilton’s most historic neighbourhoods (and home to McMaster University.) If you go west, you’ll arrive in Dundas – which is also technically considered part of Hamilton.

Hamilton Proper is more encompassing. It consists of the Hamilton Mountain on the upper half of the Niagara Escarpment, which stretches from Ancaster through to upper Stoney Creek, as well as the lower half of the Niagara Escarpment, from the Westdale & Ainslie Wood neighbourhoods in the west, ending in the east where the lower Town of Stoney Creek begins.

Cost of Living

The City of Hamilton overall enjoys a reputation for being more cost-friendly than our neighbours to the north east, particularly the closer you get to Toronto. It seems that nearly everything is more affordable here, from gas and groceries to finding a place to call home.

That said, Hamilton is vast and diverse, with housing types ranging from entry-level to ultra-luxurious. Downtown and east-end neighbourhoods tend to offer more affordable options, whereas prices can increase as you head up the mountain or to the west. In Ancaster, you’ll find some of the most expensive real estate in the city.

Parks and Green Spaces

Hamilton is known as the Waterfall Capital of the World, thanks to more than 100 breathtaking cascades all over the city. These range from Mount Albion Falls on the east mountain to Tiffany Falls on the western edge of the Niagara Escarpment. Many of these natural wonders are located along the Bruce Trail, which is Canada’s oldest and longest trail.

When it comes to greenery, comparing Ancaster with Hamilton is a bit of a tossup. If we were forced to choose, we might say that Hamilton has a slight edge, but only because of its greater size.

Family-Friendly Communities and Schools

Both Hamilton and Ancaster offer safe and vibrant neighbourhoods that are ideal for families. Where you end up will depend partly on the age of your children, lifestyle preferences, and how long you want to stay in one place.

Ancaster has excellent schools for elementary and secondary students. You can experience more of a small-town vibe with relatively easy access to great amenities.

Both regions are covered by the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board or the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board. Ancaster also features highly rated private alternatives, including Foundations Montessori School and Strata Montessori Adolescent School. Hamilton District Christian High is also available for parents who prefer a Christian education in the Protestant tradition.

As a bigger city, Hamilton offers even more options in terms of schooling at all levels. Hillfield Strathallan College is the most well-known private school in the area. Located on the west mountain, it is easily accessible for both Hamilton and Ancaster residents. In addition, Mohawk College and McMaster University are among the most highly sought-after postsecondary institutions in the province.

City Amenities

Ancaster residents will experience no shortage of big-city conveniences, such as superb shopping and great dining options. The Meadowlands offers numerous big box stores such as Best Buy, Chapters, Sport Chek, and more, as well as a variety of chain restaurants.

If you’re looking for a more old-school experience, Ancaster Village is one of the most unique districts around, featuring a collection of independent shops amid a picturesque and historic setting. It is also the location of a walking tour, along with a fantastic farmer’s market that runs from spring until fall.

Some areas of Ancaster are on public transit routes, but access is more limited overall. As convenient as the Town of Ancaster may be, you’ll find even more amenities in Hamilton itself due to its size and population. Limeridge Mall, Jackson Square, Eastgate Square, and the Centre on Barton are among the most well-known shopping districts.

However, there are countless mini plazas and specialty stores throughout the city, in addition to restaurants in every type of cuisine imaginable. Chain restaurants, cozy coffee shops, international fare, independent eateries; you will find it all and more. Hamilton is also well-served by public transit, both on the mountain and down the escarpment, making it relatively easy to get around.
